WELLINGTON, July 12 (Xinhua/Lu Huaiqian) The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) will hold a special leaders’ meeting on July 16 to discuss the COVID-19 epidemic and its economic impact, New Zealand Prime Minister Christine Ardern announced on July 12.

The meeting will be held online and will be hosted by New Zealand, the host of APEC 2021. Ms Ardern said in a statement that the meeting would be the first special meeting at the leaders’ level since APEC was established, reflecting “our desire to emerge together from the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis”.
Ardern said APEC has suffered its biggest economic contraction since World War II in the past year, with 81 million jobs lost. Member economies have taken countermeasures, but much remains to be done to overcome the crisis. During the meeting, participants will share information to continue to build consensus on the region’s fight against the epidemic and develop a coordinated economic response.
She said the meeting will discuss topics such as “responding to COVID-19 through rapid, safe and effective vaccination, developing micro – and macro-economic policies that support businesses and workers, and building more resilient, inclusive and sustainable economies.”
